Zarzuela, the concerts by Pony Bravo and Pajaro, and the ‘Pepe Suero’ Popular Song Festival are the stars of the week’s cultural agenda

The month of May enters its final stretch, filling the musical venues and neighborhoods of Seville with music with a varied offer that ranges from rock, to zarzuela, through indie or popular songs. Thus, the Espacio Turina, whose program will run until mid-June, receives on the 27th and 28th the Compañía Sevillana de Zarzuela, which will perform the work Water, Sugars and Brandy; while the Teatro Lope de Vega, which opened the curtain on the new season on October 1, will be opening this Saturday the 28th with the show offered by the Sevillian band Pony Bravo, a benchmark on the Spanish independent scene. To these is added the concert that Andrés Herrera ‘Pájaro’ will offer on Wednesday 25 at the CEIP Concepción Estevarena and the celebration of the Popular Song Festival ‘Pepe Suero’, on Saturday 28, in Poeta Miguel Hernández square.

The Compañía Sevillana de Zarzuela will attend its usual appointment of the season at Espacio Turina with Water, sugar and brandy. The orchestra and soloists of this ensemble will perform this work by Miguel Ramos Carrión with music by Federico Chueca on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 (both at 8:00 p.m.). Set in Madrid at the end of the 19th century, this one-act zarzuela places the action in the vicinity of the Verbena de San Lorenzo, on Paseo de Recoletos, to tell the story of Anastasia, a girl who, despite wearing a miserable life in the capital with her mother (doña Simona), she dreams of marrying Serafín, the son of a former minister.

The Compañía Sevillana de Zarzuela, based at the University of Seville, was born in 2009 within a group of students with three clear objectives: to rescue the musical genre of zarzuela in all its aspects, to be a training-employment bridge for young people Andalusians who intend to dedicate themselves professionally to the musical performing arts sector and seek the donation of economic resources to non-profit entities through the collection of ticket sales of the represented productions.

Closing of the season at Lope de Vega

The Lope de Vega closes its season on Saturday 28 (8:00 p.m.) with the premiere of White Mirror, Pony Bravo’s last show; a scenic expansion of the music, texts and images that have marked the group’s identity for 15 years, habitual on the covers of specialized publications such as rockdelux Y Sound World.

With this proposal designed for theaters and that leads to more electronic and futuristic rhythms, Daniel Alonso, Pablo Peña, Darío del Moral and Raúl Pérez pay homage to the future city that will be Seville while warning about some of its dystopias, unfolding all the conceptual and artistic power that brings together the band, which has four records on the market: If I go down on my back I’m not afraid (and other stories) (2007), a gram of faith (2010), Of clapping and hunting (2013) and Guru (2019).

Throughout its history, Pony Bravo has visited genres such as electro, flamenco, elitadisco or the dub to shape already mythical themes such as Ninja of Fire, The neo-liberal politician, God’s Rave, My ID either totomami, in which they mix genres without any kind of complex. In White Mirror they revisit some of these themes and present new compositions that will form part of what will be their fifth album. And all of this with a stage proposal, which will be staged at Lope de Vega, coordinated by the theater director, performer and musician Fran Torres, in addition to the indispensable collaboration of Benito Jiménez in creating the lights and the scenic space, and Javier Mora, who will be in charge of sound.

Previously, on Wednesday 25 (10:00 p.m.), and as part of the activities organized for the 50th anniversary of Parque Alcosa, the legendary guitarist Andrés Herrera ‘Pájaro’, originally from the neighbourhood, will close with his performance the commemorative act of the also 50 anniversary of CEIP Concepción Estevarena.

Entitled ‘From Santa Leone to El Gran Poder – Diez años de Pajaro’, the guitarist from Sacramento, a band he was part of with Silvio, will review in this concert some of the songs from his solo career, with three albums released: Saint Leone(2012), I have killed the angel (2016) and Great power (2018).

The last musical event of the week will take place on Saturday 28 (8:30 p.m.). This is the first ‘Pepe Suero’ Popular Song Festival that will bring together artists such as Manuel Céspedes, Pepa Bulnes, Rafael and Luis Tabales, Lidia Montero, Charo Pedraja or Vahan in the Poeta Miguel Hernández square (Parque Estoril, Cerro del Águila). Davtyan, among others.

Promoted by the Parque Estoril Neighborhood Association with the collaboration of the Cerro-Amate District, this meeting around music was created to pay tribute to Pepe Suero, an artist from Cerro del Águila awarded the Medal of Andalusia in 2006 and whose work is a plea against injustice and inequality in the Andalusia of the Transition.
