With guided tours, concerts and artistic exhibitions USM celebrates Heritage Day

The House of Studies will open the doors of the Central House Campus in Valparaíso this Sunday for various activities. There will be food trucks and access will be free and open to all public.


Starting at 10:30 a.m. this Sunday, and after 2 years in which the university was unable to celebrate in person, the Federico Santa María Technical University will once again welcome the community in commemoration of Heritage Day 2022. This time it will offer a series of activities that will be broadcast to all Campuses and Venues through tv.usm.cl, in addition to a special programming of Radio USM, which from Saturday May 28 will commemorate the great concerts held in its Aula Magna Theater.

Among the main attractions that will take place in person after two years, highlights include the concert by La Regia Orquesta Quinteto, a display of personal belongings belonging to Federico Santa María Carrera and the traditional tour of the Campus premises. In the case of the special broadcasts of Radio USM, it is important to mention the lyrical concert performed in 1953 by the soprano Rayén Quitral together with the pianist Frieda Laudien, who was also the wife of the first rector of the Institution.

About this commemoration of Heritage Day, Piero Soto, General Director of Communications of the USMhighlights that “We are very happy to reopen our doors to the entire community and we have prepared a complete program of activities for all the people who visit us. They will be able to tour our Campus, learn about the history of the University and that of our founder, Mr. Federico Santa María Carrera, in addition to enjoying the concerts, dance performances, and the different artistic and cultural initiatives that we have prepared for this year and that We hope that everyone can enjoy with their families”.

The face-to-face activities organized by the University will begin on Sunday, May 29, at 10:30 a.m., with a guided tour of the most emblematic places of the Casa Central Valparaíso Campus. From the same time, and until the end of the day, the shows “Federico Santa María: personal objects of our founder”which will have on display some assets that belonged to the renowned philanthropist and were donated in 2019 to the University.

Later, the Student Orchestra, the Chamber Choir and the University Tuna will offer concerts to the public, while different groups of the Institution will present national and Latin American dances, as well as a sample of folk music. Also, the company Alumbra Creando will tell two stories of native Chilean peoples in the show “Cuentos a la Rueda”.

Finally, the Regia Quintet Orchestra, responsible for creating the original music for the play “La Negra Ester”, will close the day with jazz guachaca and cuecas choras. It should be noted that food trucks will operate throughout the day in the Central Patio.

Likewise, as in previous years, Radio USM (99.7 FM and 1450 AM) will be part of the heritage billboard on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29, with a special program focused on rescuing historical recordings from the Artistic Season of the House of Studies and concerts that are part of the Chilean musical heritage, such as the one performed by the Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau, together with the Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Juan Pablo Izquierdo, as part of his visit to our country in 1984.
