The Epopée 1902 vintages from Wolfberger – Kiss My Chef

If the Crémant or the Grand Cru Rangen undeniably evoke Alsace, these appellations are also true icons at Wolfberger. On the occasion of its 120th anniversary, the Alsatian cooperative serves us its winemaking know-how through 2 exceptional bottles of Epopée 1902, in limited edition and whose labels recall the key figures of its 12 decades of existence.

Epic Crémant d'Alsace

Epic 1902, Crémant d’Alsace extra brut in Jeroboam

Grapes carefully harvested by hand at optimal maturity, 42 months of maturation on the lees, traditional vinification with alcoholic and malolactic fermentation which enhances the potential of the 2017 vintage, a fine and delicate cuvée. If the Crémant d’Alsace is essential at Wolfberger, this one deserved an exceptional bottle: the jeroboam (3 L), ideal for aging in the cellar and increasing its aging potential tenfold, because it allows less oxygenation and more thermal inertia.

Beneath its pale gold color shot through with fine strings of bubbles, the nose offers a harmonious mosaic of aromas of white fruits, quince marmalade and toasted hazelnuts. On the palate, its breadth is underlined by toasted and subtly vanilla notes with a persistent, saline and crystalline freshness on the finish.

Ideal as an aperitif, this extra brut Crémant d’Alsace also goes perfectly with iodized dishes such as noble fish such as a fillet of turbot with chanterelles or a bass in a salt crust, shellfish such as langoustines with spices or a lobster bisque soufflé, or a cream of butternut squash with porcini mushrooms and scallops…

Pinot Gris Grand Cru Rangen

Epopée 1902, Pinot Gris Grand Cru Rangen semi-dry in Magnum

An emblematic Grand Cru of Alsace of volcanic origin, exploited by Hervé Schwendenmann, the Pinot Gris Rangen reveals here a drier and more gastronomic profile than usual, thanks to the potential of the 2019 vintage and to a more advanced alcoholic fermentation. From an Agri Confiance® and High Environmental Value level 3 certified farm, harvested at the beginning of October for 3 days, this cuvée is available in magnum format (1.5 L) for slower aging and longer keeping time. A fine testimony to Wolfberger’s know-how in varying interpretations around a terroir and a vintage.

Beneath its golden colour, this semi-dry Rangen Pinot Gris reveals notes of roasting and dried fruit. Then, after aeration, notes of candied fruit are revealed. As for the mouth, it is full with a nice balance on the freshness.

It is eaten with a rack of lamb with spices, a half-mourning chicken or scallops roasted with bacon and blue cheese. It also goes wonderfully with a chestnut velouté with hazelnut chips and coppa, a thin tart with porcini mushrooms and figs or even a revisited Tiramisu with chestnuts.

Wolfber’s Epopée 1902 cuvées are available online and at wine merchants for €89 for an extra brut Crémant d’Alsace jeroboam and €49 for a magnum of Pinot Gris.
