Symphonic Cycle 2022: Italian pianist Orazio Sciortino gives two concerts in Lima

Lima.- The Lima Philharmonic Society continues the celebrations for its 115th anniversary with the presentation of the virtuoso pianist and composer Orazio Sciortino, who arrives in Lima to start the 2022 Symphonic Cycle. The young Italian musician will offer two concerts, on Saturday 28 at the Great National Theater, accompanied by the National Bicentennial Youth Symphony Orchestra directed by Pablo Sabat, and on Tuesday 31 will be presented in a recital at the Santa Úrsula Auditorium.

Orazio Sciortino began playing the piano at the age of eight and gave his first performance when he was just 11 years old. Coming from a family deeply rooted in art, he chose to pursue the piano before formally studying classical music at the Milan Conservatory. He started as a composer at the same time that he started playing the instrument.

He currently collaborates with important musical institutions such as the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, La Fenice Theater Orchestra, Ravello Festival, RAI National Symphony Orchestra, Verona Philharmonic Academy, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, I Pomeriggi Musicali, among others.

Sciortino is going through one of his best moments as a musician. He has performed several concerts as a pianist, soloist and in chamber groups, and also as a director. In recent months he has composed a piece for orchestra recently performed in Padua by the prestigious Orchestra of Padova and Veneto; a musical story for children; a new string quartet for the 100th anniversary of an important chamber music season in Italy and much more.

“This is the third time that I return to Peru and I can say that it is like coming home. The public is always very warm and attentive, sensitive to any type of repertoire. In the first concert on the 28th at the GTN, I will perform one of the most famous piano concertos of all time, Mozart’s K 467; At the piano recital, on Tuesday the 31st at the Santa Úrsula Auditorium, I will play music by Busoni, Bartok and Liszt: a lot of virtuosity but also references, quotes from popular songs and dances. I would like to be there”, comments Orazio Sciortino about his next presentations.

At the recent inauguration of the 115th Anniversary commemorative program, which marks the return to face-to-face concerts, the President of the Lima Philharmonic Society, Dr. Salomón Lerner Febres, highlighted: “The reason for this renewed season of concerts is to in the end, to meet again. It is a joy to share this special moment that is of proximity and celebration».

He also recalled the effect and power of art and music, in particular, during the isolation that the pandemic forced us into and the sadness that death caused: “Music aspires to proclaim what the great poet Emilio Adolfo Westphalen called the abolition of death. It is a ritual proclamation, without a doubt, what we musically call a threno, a deep cry and desire that rebel against fatality”.

“Through music our dead come back to life in the rhythm that nests in our hearts and we maintain the permanent demand to achieve a free and full existence. The clamor of music is also a permanent agony against noise, which interrupts and confuses our feelings. This task was assumed 115 years ago by the Lima Philharmonic Society, which since its foundation has managed to offer uninterrupted seasons with the highest forms of music to the Peruvian public”, he concluded amidst long applause.
