“O Romeo! Romeo! Why are you Romeo? Deny your father and abdicate your name; or, if you will not, swear to love me, and I will be no more a Capulet.” Rarely has a work been more suitable, for cinema, theater or even ballet, thanRomeo and Juliet published in 1597 by William Shakespeare. But did you know that before falling in love with the beautiful Juliet, it was to another, Rosaline, her cousin, that Romeo had declared his love? What give us to see the lover chilled in another light, is not it? If Rosaline figures well in Shakespeare’s play, it is not her name that history has retained, faced with the tragic fate of the two lovers from Verona. It is therefore this oversight that Disney + is repairing today with the film dedicated to the young girl, Rosaline, available this Friday, October 14. An entertaining romantic comedy, which owes much to the interpretation of the main actress, Kaitlyn Dever.

Direction Verona, therefore, where Rosaline Capulet burns with love for Roméo Montaigu, the son of the enemy family of hers, who declaims verses to her on her balcony and embraces her lovingly in the light of the moon. But now, fate gets in her way when she poses, despite herself, a rabbit to the budding poet, stuck on a boat in the middle of a storm with yet another suitor sent by her father, eager to marry her at all price. In Rosaline’s absence, the Romeo quickly forgets his beauty when he meets Juliette Capulet by chance… Of course, we know the story, but the film directed by Karen Maine (Yes, God, Yes) revisits it and gives it a new twist thanks to Rosaline’s modernity and intelligence.
After the dramas, actress Kaitlyn Dever excels in comedy
Unlike most romantic comedies, here, we don’t really want Rosaline to end up finding her Romeo. First, because who would you be to stand in the way of the two most famous lovers in the world? And then, because Romeo passes here for an idiot and a womanizer, and we say to ourselves that Rosaline deserves much better. Like the charming Dario for example, whom she pushes away as hard as she can.

It is therefore not for the story that Rosaline pushes us to continue the film to the end but for the tenacity of this 16th century teenager. Karen Maine has made the young girl an ultra-modern character both in her thought and in her language. And we love to see actress Kaitlyn Dever in a comic and romantic register that suits her well. The 25-year-old American actress had until now rather accustomed us to dramas, excelling in tragic series unbelievable (Netflix) and dopesick (Disney+), hard to forget. She proves in Rosaline that the secondary characters are sometimes the most interesting in the story, and that’s good!
