the singer of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis, has gotten wet when talking about the slap that Will Smith gave Chris Rock at the Oscars last month. (via NME).
Last month, Smith punched the comedian at the Oscars after he made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. After apologizing several times for the incident, Smith has since ceased to be a member of the academy and described his actions as “shocking, painful and inexcusable”.
When asked in an interview with Howard Stern, Red Hot Chili Peppers singer Kiedis replied “that there’s already been a lot of talk” about it.
Then the band’s guitarist, John Frusciante, chimed in saying, “We love Chris Rock and I’m going to step up and say he shouldn’t have been slapped.” Not surprisingly, Rock inducted the band into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
Kiedis later gave his opinion: “I love comedy, I love comedians, and I love being offended.”
“Although it wasn’t necessarily offensive at the time… I hope I can be offended in another situation. Because I think it’s healthy to be offended and reflect. Comedy has a right to exist without a lot of violence.”
Other artists have also spoken out about the Smith vs. Rock scandal, including, for example, Julian Casablancas, lead singer of The Strokes, who said that “nobody supported Chris Rock” after the slap.
“Will Smith should have tried to take on Eminem and Dr. Dre in the same way… isn’t it Chris Rock’s job to make fun of people in the audience? Very weird”he added.
The singer also criticized Smith’s way of acting and pointed out that the actor came to train to play Muhammad Ali in his 2001 biopic and that, therefore, his actions were not “but an act of harassment”.
The band has already released their new work, ‘Unlimited Love’.
The new Red Hot Chili Peppers album -their first with John Frusciante from ‘Stadium Arcadium’ 2006– has been produced by Rick Rubin, who has already worked on ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik’ (1991), ‘Californication’ (1999), ‘By The Way’ (2002) and the previously mentioned ‘Stadium Arcadium’.
About the new album the band says the following: “Our only goal is to lose ourselves in the music. We – John, Anthony, Chad and Flea – have spent hundreds of hours, collectively and individually, perfecting our craft and showing it to each other to make the best album we could. With our antennas tuned to the divine cosmos, we were so grateful for the opportunity to be in a room together and once again try to improve. We spend days, weeks and months listening to each other, composing, freely improvising and arranging the fruit of those improvisations with great care and purpose. The sounds, the rhythms, the vibrations, the words and the melodies had us spellbound.”
“We long to shine a light on the world, to uplift, connect and unite people. Every song on our new album ‘Unlimited Love’ is a facet of us, reflecting our vision of the universe. This is the mission of our life. We work, focus and prepare so that when the biggest wave comes, we are ready to ride it. The ocean has given us a powerful wave and this album is the ride that is the sum of our lives. Thank you for listening to it, we hope you enjoy it.”
For his part, Frusciante has said the following: “When we started writing material, we started playing old songs by people like Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson, The Kinks, The New York Dolls, Richard Barrett and others. Little by little, we came up with more ideas, turning improvisations into songs, and after a couple of months we were already playing the new material. The feeling of fun that we have had playing other people’s songs has been maintained while we were writing. To me, this record represents our love for – and faith in – each other.”
The songs that are part of ‘Unlimited Love’ are:
02. Here Ever After
03. Aquatic Mouth Dance
04. Not The One
