Ten–eight. is the number of weeks (out of a total of ten–nine) from which the album PlanetHer by Doja Cat, his third, is number one on the R album sales chart&B besides–Atlanticaccording to Billboard Magazine. And since its release last June, the album’s singles have been a hit: the retro disco Kiss Me More with SZA, the silky “You Right” with The Weeknd, the very inspired Playboi Carti “Need to Know”, or another “Woman” with Nigerian afrobeats accents, a decidedly very fashionable genre. The success of these singles makes Doja Cat the first woman to land four radio airplay charts in one year since Rihanna in 2012. A success that confirms that Doja Cat is indeed one of the current stars of American music.
This is all the more remarkable considering that just four years ago, Doja Cat was mostly an internet phenomenon.. With its hybrid music, which draws as much on R&B, rap and pop. But also thanks to his eccentricity which mixes his taste for absurd humor and his sex appeal. Like his title “Moooo”, the artist’s first viral “hit” with a very stupid homemade clipin which she wore cow-patterned lingerie and stuck french fries up her nose. But his particular sense of humor, fed on the troll culture of the Internet, played tricks on him.. To the point that she had to explain herself last year on old racist remarks on far-right oriented forums when she was younger. What has obviously not scratched his career. She made amends by apologizing for these various controversies. And above all, she released hits. Which allowed him to quickly evacuate these bad buzz.
“Say So” was his hit of 2020, a hit on TikTok and in singles sales. And his latest album PlanetHer develops the formulas she adopted with her album hot pink last year. “Kiss Me More”, the first single from the album, is in line with “Say So”. We also find on the album The Weeknd and Ariana Grande – we can’t do more pop in 2021. But Doja also remains faithful to the music she has been developing since 2018.. She is in her own way in the line of Nicki Minaj, with less ferocity when she raps, more lightness when she sings, but with whom she shares this desire to be pop.. But even though Doja Cat’s music is obviously well produced, there is a form of je–I don’t care–foutism in her which gives her an anti side–diva but who looks like it anyway. Doja Cat is an icon of the TikTok and Instagram generation where we make people believe that we are natural but not too much either, without forcing the line.
