Our Phair lady would she have calmed down since Exile in Guyville (1993) and among others his Divorce Song where she sang that it’s harder to be friends than lovers? Not sure. Spanish Doors is a track “about the rift of a good life, when suddenly everything you counted on is thrown into jeopardy. I was inspired by a friend who was going through a divorce, but the actions in the lyrics are my own . I talk about hiding in the bathroom when everyone around you is having a good time but your life just fell apart. You look in the mirror and wonder who you are now, shadows of doubt creeping into your eyes. Just moments ago you were a whole, confident person and now you wonder how you will ever find the magic again. » Meeting his self again after a period of sobriety, dismissing despite the difficulty and the pain the moments of happiness which were the sweetest, trying to forget, despite the whiffs of memories and the castles in Spain: « There’s no life here without you, just the echo of our love, I’m slowly disappearing behind our Spanish Doors. »
Liz Phair – Spanish Doors
Is something wrong?
You take my hand, I play along
But I can tell it’s bad
I don’t want to talk about it
Cause talking about it makes me sad
Why would I agree to something like that?Pushing past the table, spilling my drink
Locked up in the bathroom, staring at the sink
I don’t want to see anybody I know
I don’t want to be anywhere that you and I used to goI’m slowly disappearing behind our Spanish Doors
The ghost I see in the mirror doesn’t smile anymoreWhat about the kids? What about the house? What about our friends? What do I do now?
Pushing past the table, spilling my drink
Locked up in the bathroom staring at the sink
I don’t want to see anybody I know
I don’t want to be anywhere you and I used to goI’m slowly disappearing behind our Spanish Doors
The ghost I see in the mirror doesn’t smile anymoreWhere do I go? What do I do? Who can I tell about it?
There’s no way out of this place
I can’t hide my lying face. There’s no life here without you, just the echo of our loveI’m slowly disappearing behind our Spanish Doors
The ghost I see in the mirror doesn’t smile anymore
