Music – A Berruyer behind the clip with more than 30 million views and shot in Ukraine by international popstar Rosalía

Posted two months ago, the clip, made last summer in kyiv, has already exceeded 30 million views on YouTube. A new “beautiful line on the CV” of Berrichon who does not hide his concern for the future of the film industry in Ukraine, the country where he used to work.

How did this collaboration with Rosalía, the new queen of Latin pop and a true international phenomenon, come about?

These are the previous collaborations that make the little Berrichon who wants to break into the middle manages to make the clip of this world star. My work with A$AP Ferg, on a title in which the icon Pharrell Williams participated, has been talked about a bit. It reached the ears of Rosalía and her entourage who approached me. It’s the kind of project you can’t refuse, because you know you’ll gain experience and your notoriety will rise in the industry.

I learned a lot in contact with an artist and her entourage who know exactly what they want, very difficult to convince.

Is this a consecration for you?

I no longer see a nice line on the CV. When you want to attack the American market as I would like to do, it is important to have such an international reference. Rosalía is an artist for the global market, with a very American imagery, and a clip that, I’m sure, will reach 100 million views in the coming months. It’s a world a little less dark, a little less violent than what I’m used to, more general public, which can open doors for me. I learned a lot in contact with an artist and her entourage who know exactly what they want, very difficult to convince. To give an example, to arrive at the final version of a clip, when it comes to a very demanding artist, I can offer up to twenty intermediate versions. With Rosalia, there were 62!

In this clip where Rosalía is at the head of a gang of bikers, we think we recognize the kyiv bridge on which Orelsan had shot the viral clip of Basic

It’s the same. The images were shot last summer in kyiv and the surrounding area, a place where I had already been able to work twice in the past for commercials for alcohol and cosmetics brands. Already, at the time of Rosalía’s clip, we felt that the situation was tense on the spot. If we had managed to bring in riders from all over the world, from the United States, from Norway, a Russian had not been able to come to Ukraine, stranded at the airport in Russia.

It was a sort of El Dorado for directors.

Why did you choose to shoot this clip in Ukraine?

When you work in the clip economy, with tight budgets, while, paradoxically, artists and record companies brew millions, you are looking for a qualified and financially accessible workforce. In Ukraine, where major American productions have set up their cameras over the past ten years, there has been a real rise in skills. It was a sort of El Dorado for directors.

You talk about it in the past tense. We sense a certain pessimism in your remarks…

With this war, I’m afraid that my generation will no longer set foot in Ukraine to make films, music videos. Beyond the destroyed decorations, like the country, it is a whole sector which is annihilated. Extremely skilled men I’ve worked with have lost their lives. The whole cinematographic economy has turned to countries in the development phase in this sector, such as Serbia and Bulgaria, where I went last week to make a commercial. It should initially have been shot in Ukraine, but the context unfortunately forced us to find a fallback solution.

You have been approached by the teams who are applying for Bourges to become European Capital of Culture in 2028. What role can you play?

It’s true, Pascal Keizer (general commissioner of the Berruyère candidacy, editor’s note) contacted me to make videos highlighting the candidacy of my favorite city. I would have really loved to add my stone to this building, but it came at a very complicated time for me, with an insane shooting schedule. But if, later, I can help, it will be with great pleasure
