After two years of inactivity, the urban music festival now presents its second edition. It had been canceled, due to the pandemic, in 2020 and 2021.

A few thousand festival-goers turned out, under the Montreal spring sun, to attend the return of the Metro Metro festival on Friday. Featuring big names in Quebec, French and American hip-hop, the event is held until Sunday, on the Esplanade of the Olympic Park.

Flamboyant clothes, hands in the air and a desire to celebrate were on the agenda from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m., during a day punctuated by performances by rappers Trippie Redd, Tory Lanez, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and Lil Pump.

I love your energy, Montreal! I love this city.

Lil Pump, during his performance

If we thought we saw excitement during the performance of Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, his successor Tory Lanez completely ignited the festival-goers. At times, the Ontario rapper could drop his mic and listen to the audience sing along to his lyrics. He also launched into a walkabout for a good ten minutes.

Trippie Redd

It was the American Trippie Redd who closed the ball rolling. As soon as he arrived, the enthusiasm of the public was palpable. A few “Trippie” were chanted during his segment, the last of the evening.

A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie was originally supposed to sing at 8:15 p.m., but organizer Olivier Primeau and the two hosts were forced to interrupt the show for about twenty minutes to ask festival-goers, who were crowding near the stage, to step back. Some shorter people had difficulty moving, an official told The Press.

Courteous requests from the hosts were answered first with ” We want Boogie [On veut Boogie] “, repeat. However, the situation calmed down before the artist took the stage.

On the site, we also noticed several heat strokes. Some visitors even had to be carried by security guards. However, the organization of Metro Metro, after discussion with its medical team, confirmed to The Press that “it was nothing abnormal” and that we were dealing with a “regular festival day” in terms of soliciting first responders on site.

Start of the day

Native of Montreal and established in Los Angeles, rapper Nate Husser took advantage of an invested crowd to put on a good show. He approached the spectators a few times.

Rapper Koriass

The Quebec duo of Koriass and FouKi subsequently generated less enthusiasm than expected. After performing a few songs from their joint album, Herbogenists, Koriass addressed the crowd. “Do you want to see them often, shows in Montreal? he asked them, showing them that they could clap or make noise after a song.

Alicia Moffet and Jay Scott, who have both collaborated with FouKi in the past, were also invited to spend some time in front of the public.

During the afternoon, before the majority of the crowd had arrived, a few hundred festival-goers attended performances by DJ Manifest, MiQ The Burb Boy, Jasper Good, 3MFrench and Pengz. Rapper Calamine, named Révélation Radio-Canada 2021-2022, closed the march.

Montreal, hip-hop city

To put it with Gaël Comtois, one of the organizers of Metro Metro, the festival “represents the credibility of the city in terms of hip-hop culture”. According to him, there are several places in the world that are recognized for their hip-hop culture. New York, USA, and Marseille, France are good examples.

Gaël Comtois is one of the organizers of the Metro Metro festival.

In Canada, Montreal is also one. […] It is a city very rich in rap culture at all levels. Metro Metro brings the coat of arms, the crown. It’s really the strong festival, the culmination, which shows that hip-hop is at its strongest and that Montreal still has a lot to contribute.

“Hip-hop is so big,” continues Olivier Primeau, event organizer. We exceeded first year sales [en 2019]. Our clientele is really participating. »

At Metro Metro, a day pass costs nearly $130, plus tax. For the full weekend, it’s almost $290 and for the VIP ticket, $465. “The goal is for people to pay dearly to see our artists, to pay top dollar, but to be happy with all the dollars spent. “, he comments.

Usually, the big festivals in Montreal take place on the site of Parc Jean-Drapeau. Olivier Primeau considers that Metro Metro, produced by the Olympic Park, the Midway group and DNA LIVE, stands out for its location. “At the Olympic Stadium, you don’t really need a set,” he told The Press. You look at the stadium, you have a view of the city. L’Esplanade is truly underrated in Montreal. »

Resist complications

Setting up the festival line-up came with its share of complications. “We have a slightly smaller edition because of the COVID and the booking, raises Gaël Comtois. The other cities reopened when Montreal was still closed, so we weren’t sure what was going to happen. We did a miracle with the little time we had. Our deadline [pour trouver des artistes] was very short, but it was not impossible. We have good quality. »

We had to start over from A to Z. We lost our headliners, and we put it all back together in a month and a half.

Until the last minute, Metro Metro had to deal with cancellations, but still quickly found quality substitutes. American rappers Fivio Foreign and Playboi Carti, who were due to perform on Saturday and Sunday respectively, were replaced on Friday by Sheck Wes and 50 Cent. It is the latter who will close the festivities on Sunday evening.

Several renowned rappers are on the menu for the weekend. This Saturday, Lil Baby will take the stage for the main event of the evening. Festival-goers will also have the opportunity to hear Don Toliver and Polo G, well known south of the Canada-US border. Niska, one of the most popular hip-hop artists in France, will notably be there, as will Montrealers Naya Ali and David Campana.

On Sunday, in addition to the legendary 50 Cent, DaBaby and Lil Tecca will be on stage. Loud, Quebec rap heavyweight, will be there in the evening to perform his brand new solo album released on Friday, No promise. We can also see four of the five members of the 5sang14 collective: Lost, MB, Capitaine Gaza and Random. Their partner White-B is currently serving a prison sentence. In the afternoon, rapper Mindflip, an artist from Gatineau, will follow.

After this second edition, Olivier Primeau intends to grow Metro Metro. “We are here for a long time, we love this project. Three years ago, when we started this, we never thought it would get this big. Our goal is to become unmissable in Montreal. »
