Metallica’s Lars Ulrich Pays Tribute to Late Foo Fighters Drummer Taylor Hawkins: ‘I Will Always Be Thankful to You For Standing Up For Our Community’

Just recently, the Foo Fighters announced the passing of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins. He was 50 years old.

In a statement posted on social media, the band said: “The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins.”

“His musical spirit and contagious laughter will live with us all forever. Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family, and ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect at this incredibly difficult time.”

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has since posted a tribute message on Twitter, stating: “Thank you Taylor… Thank you for always having a big warm smile on your face and for lighting up every room with your contagious energy and good vibes.”

“At BottleRock recently I had the best seat in the room right above you and once again I was amazed to see you lead the Foo Fighters with ease through a two hour set with perfect balance between swing, audacity, rebound and crazy skills.”

“Your phone call a week ago touched and inspired me, and I will always be grateful to you for standing up for our community, like in your last words… ‘Drummers stick together!’ That’s damn true, bro. Except now the community is worse off without you.”

“Rest in peace…”

The Foo Fighters were scheduled to play Estéreo Picnic 2022 in Bogata, Colombia tonight. The local site week reports that Hawkins’ body was found in his hotel room north of Bogata. The cause of death has not been announced.

Taylor Hawkins was born in Fort Worth, Texas on February 17, 1972. Prior to joining the Foo Fighters in 1997, Hawkins was Alanis Morissette’s touring drummer during her hit album, Jagged Little Pill.

An inveterate singer, he was also known for being the frontman for various side projects, including the Birds Of Satan/Chevy Metal – a cover band that played little-known tunes from ZZ Top, Deep Purple, Van Halen, Black Sabbath and others – and, more recently, NHC, a supergroup with Dave Navarro and Chris Chaney of Jane’s Addiction.

Additionally, Hawkins has lent his session musician talents to everyone from Coheed And Cambria (he recorded the drum tracks for the album Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow , released in 2007, and briefly toured with the band) to Slash (he provided backing vocals on 2010’s song Crucify The Dead with Ozzy Osbourne).

The news of Hawkins’ death was met with shock and sadness by his friends and peers in the Rock world.

Former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy said: “I’ve always had a lot of admiration for him. He was an incredible drummer and a pearl who was always pleasant to be around. I am absolutely disgusted…”

Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello wrote: “God bless you, Taylor Hawkins. I loved your spirit and your unstoppable rock power. Rest in peace my friend.”

Serj Tankian, lead singer of System Of A Down, posted: “Really saddened and shocked by this news. Our love goes out to his family and the Foos. We have had unforgettable moments on tour together. He will be missed.”

Progressive Metal band Mastodon said: “This is devastating news. He was an amazing drummer and an even cooler guy. The world is less cool without him. Our hearts go out to the Foo Fighters and Taylor’s family, it’s amazing.”

Disturbed frontman David Draiman wrote: “I’ve seen a lot of bands live in my life and I can honestly say that I’ve never seen a drummer and a guitarist interact in a more jovial, authentic and entertaining way than Taylor Hawkins and Dave Grohl. He was one of the greatest of all time…I’m devastated.”
