The Princess of Pop presented her “Future Nostalgia Tour” in a boiling Accor Arena. We were there.
The last time she performed in Paris was in 2018 at the Lolappallooza festival. Four more years the world has changed and Dua Lipa has become a mega-star in just two albums. Britney entangled, Madonna tired, Katy Perry on a break, the road was clear for the English pop to break out on the planet. So inevitably, on paper, this “Future Nostalgia Tour” was damn good. At 9 p.m. when the lights go out it is to better reveal the credits of a film on the background screen.
Each dancer has the right to his presentation before the princess of the evening appears. And here it is, in her pink leotard which tumbles on “Physical”. From the outset Dua Lipa impresses with her determination as well as her grip: the young woman will carry the whole show on her shoulders, shining in the middle of her troupe of 10 dancers, far ahead of her musicians hidden on the sides of the stage. Choreographies settled, sequences nickels, we feel very quickly that the show of the Englishwoman is millimeter and little inclined to slippages. But in the middle of this vast machinery Dua Lipa sings just when her microphone is open, dances, provokes, without ever falling into vulgarity and above all sends a package of hits that make Paris roar.
Especially since the two years of pandemic have allowed the public to know the lyrics by heart – something quite rare for titles in English. So “Love again” is sung at the top of the lungs, when “Break my heart” allows the Lipa team to walk on stage with a heart in their hands. But it is “Be the one” his first single that overthrows Bercy. 30 minutes have passed and Dua Lipa is already going backstage to get changed. She returns in a sequined bodysuit for a mischievous and rebellious act 2.
The sexy “good in bed” is followed by “Fever” – his duet with Angele. And when the young Belgian comes on stage, almost uncomfortable in her white ensemble, Paris gives her a standing ovation. In three minutes, two worlds come together: the almost hushed one of Angele and the totally delirious and sexy one of Dua Lipa. But the public does not have time to breathe that here is already “Boys will be boys” another huge tube, so gay friendly, taken up as it should be by 18,000 spectators all standing since the first minute of the concert.
For act 3, Dua Lipa returns in sporty outfit – Dior sneakers on her feet. This time everything is played on the front stage, in a padded atmosphere, reminiscent of the New York clubs of the 80s. A fantasy of a bygone era? Regardless, Dua demonstrates her pop savvy with two high-flying performances on “Electricty” and “Hallucinate.” “Cold Heart” finally lets you breathe -Elton John appearing on the screen in absolute indifference. Dua takes the opportunity to slip away once again to better reappear on a catwalk, while she sings “Levitating” above the crowd. Nice visual effect but which falls a little with the water – the piece probably deserving of a better treatment. During these 80 minutes of madness, Dua Lipa poured the classic speech, from “thank you Paris” to the verse on the pandemic. We regret then that the concert is coming to an end that the emotion does not touch here or there.
No Dua Lipa rushes, like a TGV launched at too high a pace. As a reminder, the very 80’s “future nostalgia” does the trick when “Don’t start now” – nice settling of accounts with this boy who dropped him – sounds like a declaration: this is who I was, this is where you left me and look what I’ve become. Dua Lipa smiled. Final black. The 90 minutes passed in the blink of an eye. Paris is sounded, Dua Lipa won.
