Dua Lipa is in the last steps of the world tour in support of Future Nostalgia and some begin to glimpse on the horizon what could happen in the future of the British artist. And how could it be otherwise, her new studio album is already one of the most eagerly-awaited albums on the music scene and it’s not yet finished.
The artist has spoken actively and passively about the patience needed to work on this new musical adventure. However, it seems that the countdown to receive DL3, the Englishwoman’s third record project, could have begun. And we are not saying it but it has been the interpreter herself who has already begun to focus on 2023.
During an interview with BBC Newscast, Dua Lipa has acknowledged that her next musical adventure is on the right track and has an estimated date in mind: “DL3 is on the way. I’m very excited about it. It’s really starting to take shape but I’m still working on it. Maybe something will come out next year, but I’m saying maybe out of caution.”
It is not necessary to be very intelligent to know that in principle the calendar of the artist and her record company could lead us to some first singles during 2023 for a later release perhaps in 2024. However, nothing is definitive because, as she herself confesses, there is a requirement essential for this situation to occur.
“I have to feel really good about it before I release anything. (…) In my previous album I think it faithfully reflects the naturalness and fun with which we worked on it and that is something that I also want to reflect in my new album” said Dua Lipa during the aforementioned interview.
What do we know about Dua Lipa’s new album?
As I said, the artist has spoken countless times about her third album but without ever specifying too many details. One of his last statements came last month assuring that there will be a great liberation around this project: “As I have been writing my album, I have been feeling more and more liberated in a completely different way. And I even feel that I’m in control more than I ever believed. Freedom, especially as a woman, means being able to do things for yourself, having control over things you believe in. And really having a voice. I’ve definitely matured. In all the senses, both musically and lyrically. I’ve matured. The new album is definitely going to be about empowerment. (…) It’s like I’m coming into my true power and I’m not afraid to speak up about everything. I am understanding what it is that I want.”
It was in 2021 when she spoke for the first time about this idea of turning her album into an album that reaffirmed the role of women in music, using, above all, female producers: “I hope that in the future I can work with some producers. Sincere and I honestly don’t know too many. And I would because I would like to take the time to sit down with them and polish a sound with women.” Dua Lipa also confesses that she can only have positive words for the producers with whom she has previously worked: Emily Warren and Caroline Ailin in New Rules and Sarah Hudson in Genesis. “They really helped me to be myself and to be able to write things that came from my heart. My best friends are all girls. I always feel like it’s easier to talk to them and I feel more open to female energy. Maybe If women had a little more of all of this in their studies, it wouldn’t be so intimidating to start.”
Different, surprising, groundbreaking? Whatever the vocalist’s new album is, we can’t wait to hear it, but it seems we’ll still have to wait. Taking into account that she has already amazed the world with Dua Lipa (2017) and repeated with Future Nostalgia (2020), everything indicates that she will complete the cycle by releasing her third CD in 2023 and fulfilling her tradition of publishing a new album every 3 years.
