In a new interview with NMEthe drummer of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chad Smithhas remembered how his “amazing” experience meeting the late drummer of The Rolling Stones, Charlie Watts.
The truth is that Chad Smith is a big fan of The Rolling Stones: “They’re still on, man, they’re still back and forth. I think it’s because they were at the origin of modern rock and roll. They’re the Last of the Mohicans, they’re still going ahead somehow.”
Smith went on to explain how he met Watt, who passed away last August at age 80, playing a show at the Rose Bowl in 1994.
The musician explained how during sound check, he noticed that Watts was next to his technician. “It was August and I was wearing a full suit, standing there, at 3pm, watching us sound checkSmith recalls. “It was like, ‘Charlie fucking Watts is watching me play! Amazing!’”.
However, this was not all, because both ended up spending time together beyond strictly work.
“He was a jazz lover, he wanted to know what drummer he had. He was a very sweet and I was able to spend a day with him”Smith says. “We worked with the same drum company, called DW Drums, and we went to see the factory together. He was interested in the wooden tips, the different folds and how everything was assembled. He was very cool and very nice to everyone, a true gentleman.”
Chad has also explained how Watts, in addition to being a music lover, also enjoyed collecting.
“He would say, ‘I have some Gene Krupa watches. I’m not going to wear them, but I like to see them and think that he wore them when he went out to dinner.’ He appreciated that kind of thing. He was a true fan. When he talked, he just wanted to talk about jazz. I didn’t get more than two words out of him about the Stones or anything like that. He just wanted to talk to the whole world about jazz”.
Smith adds: “I know something, but not much, so I just nodded. You probably know people who go off on tangents about something you don’t really know, you’re like, ‘Hmmm yeah, Gerry Mulligan in 1946. Oh wow, really?’ But he was super sweet and personable and obviously an amazing musician.”
