Burjassot celebrates the birth of Vicent Andrés Estellés with comics, exhibitions, concerts and new urban murals of the poet

On September 4, 1924, the great poet Vicent Andrés Estellés was born in Burjassot. An important date for the people of Burjassot, since it is the birth of their quintessential poet when, soon, his first centenary will be celebrated. To commemorate this event, the Burjassot City Council has prepared a series of activities. The first comes through the Department for the Promotion of Valencian, headed by Manuela Carrero, who approaches the educational community of the municipality for another year to continue disseminating the relevance of this universal poet among schoolchildren.

Thus, the Department of Education will make a copy, for each of them, of the comic “Vicent Andrés Estellés. La clau que obri tots els panys”, a didactic publication published by the Valencian Academy of Language, which illustrates the life of Burjassot’s favorite son, with the aim that the youngest population knows the roots of one of the most outstanding figures of Valencian literature. Thus, at the beginning of September and coinciding with the start of the new academic year, more than 350 comics will be distributed among all the Primary schools in the town, as was done last year.

In addition, on the occasion of the celebration, an exhibition on Joan Fuster, a contemporary and friend of Estellés, and whose centenary of his birth will be celebrated in 2022, will also be inaugurated at the Casa de Cultura. The sample can be visited, between September 16 and 23, in the Municipal Library, located on the second floor of the House of Culture. In the same way, a traveling exhibition on the life and work of the writer from Burjassot, edited by the Consistory, has been made available to local secondary schools, which the centers can request throughout the year by contacting Aviva Burjassot, the Agency for Promotion of the Valenciano of the City Council, to make it coincide with the birthday of the author’s birth, or with the moment of the school year in which the figure of Estellés is being seen in the subject of Valenciano.

On the other hand, the Burjassot City Council will also sponsor the Nit Estellés concert, which will take place on September 17 at the Old Municipal Market, with performances by Pau Alabajos and Josep Aparici “Apa”, starting at 7:30 p.m. Finally, the Burjassot City Council will also inaugurate, in the coming months, the mural “Estellés per píxels”, which will be placed in porcelain on the façade of the Ausiàs March Social Centre. This initiative arises from a popular initiative made possible thanks to the Participatory Budgeting campaign launched by the Department of Citizen Participation, directed by Yolanda Andrés, thanks to which citizens have been able to decide what to invest part of the municipal budget in.

The so-called Festa Estellés was established, in 2010, in several municipalities, for the dissemination and promotion of the life and work of the Valencian poet, regarding the date of his birth. In 2015, the Festa Estellés already had 72 participating locations and even, over the years, it has also been celebrated in other countries such as Brussels or Bolivia. Prior to the consolidation of the festival, in Burjassot the Vicent Andrés Estellés Poetry Awards ceremony was already held in March, which the Consistory promoted in 1993, the year of the physical disappearance of the poet, to continue disseminating its important relevance in the framework of Valencian literature and, at the same time, continue promoting poetic creation. Awards that continue to be celebrated today and have already reached their XXI edition.

During the Festa Estellés, dinners, concerts, readings and other activities take place in different municipalities. In Burjassot, the scheduled activities are normally accompanied by the Estellés Route, organized by the Bassot Cultural Association. The information panels of the Estellés Route that run through Burjassot have been recently renovated by the Department of Culture of the Burjassot City Council, directed by Javier Naharros.
