VALENCIA. (EP) Research staff from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), experts in the Soundcool technological tool, and from the Foundation for the Promotion of Health and Biomedical Research of the Valencian Community (Fisabio), specialists in Alzheimer’s research, present a new MEVArt X concert session, a show made by people with this disease that allows us to continue analyzing the benefits of Soundcool technology.
Soundcool is a system for collaborative sound and visual creation with mobile phones and touch tablets, designed by the UPV professor and researcher Jorge Sastre. With the collaboration of Dr. José Manuel Moltó, a neurologist at the Virgen de los Lirios Hospital in Alcoi and a researcher at the Fisabio Foundation, this research project has been created that fuses art and science.
As reported in a statement, this tool, thanks to previous research carried out by the same researchers, has been revealed as a system “that allows the creation of activity prototypes for collaborative or individual neurodegenerative diseases with music, sound, image and video in a few seconds”.
“It was found that the increase in motivation, creativity, interrelation and involvement observed in people with functional diversity and in education also occur with patients with neurodegenerative diseases”, explained Dr. Moltó.
The concert will be held this Thursday, May 19, at 6:00 p.m., in the Alfons Roig auditorium of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UPV and will be broadcast via streaming. Subsequently, the results of motivation, creativity and involvement will be analyzed through questionnaires and two cases will be compared: one group with previous contact with Soundcool and the other without any previous experience.
The researcher Jorge Sastre has pointed out that, with these activities, “the aim is to verify that the positive results obtained in AFA Canals (association of relatives and people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias) are not an isolated case, as well as to advance in the demonstration that the collaborative aspect enhances cognitive stimulation and progress in the adaptation of Soundcool technology for the case of neurodegenerative diseases”.
In this way, the participating groups, AFA València and AFA Canals, will control colors, videos and video mixes to create video art from their centers for two pieces of the MEVArt X concert, nicknamed MEVArtzheimer.
Given the restrictions in nursing homes due to covid-19, it was implemented that the connection between mobiles/tablets and the computer could be made through the internet, to carry out remote therapies. This has allowed the sessions to be carried out without risk for the users of the centres.
The use of this technology has made it easier for the users of the AFA Canals association to make live and remote video art for two concerts in October and November 2021 with excellent results. With these results, Phase 1 of system validation was completed, demonstrating its applicability in the population.
Now, it is intended to start Phase 2 within the framework of the research project TANTAENDSCovid (UPV-Fisabio Alternative Therapies based on New Audiovisual Technologies for Neurodegenerative Diseases in Social Distancing Covid-19), financed by the Generalitat Valenciana, through the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, and by the UPV-Fisabio Collaboration Program (Polisabio).
In this second stage, different parameters will be assessed for the design of therapies and small-scale tests in patients, for which the same activity will be carried out with users of AFA València, who have never used the system, and again with users of AFA Canals.
