Muse’s Matt Bellamy Says The Band’s New Album Is A Response To Their Label Wanting A ‘Best Of’

In a new interview with The Big IssueMatt Bellamy, the frontman of Muserevealed that the band’s next album was crafted in response to their label’s request for a “best of.”

Instead of creating a compilation of their greatest hits, the musicians of Muse said they would instead create new songs inspired by “the best parts of their old albums”.

Bellamy said: “We got to a point where we were talking about doing a greatest hits album, and we weren’t really in favor of that. So we almost made a record which is a compilation of our greatest hits – but with new songs.”

“That means this album contains a piece of Metal – and it’s like, the best piece of metal we’ve ever done. And there’s kind of a sweet ballad, a love song, and it’s probably the best love ballad we’ve ever done, and so on.”

He added : “It’s an assemblage of all that Muse has done best. It’s a new take on all the genre types we’ve covered in the past.”

The new album, titled Will Of The Peoplewill be released on August 26, 2022 via Helium 3/Warner Bros.

At time album announcementBellamy commented: “Will Of The People was created in Los Angeles and London and is influenced by the growing uncertainty and instability in the world. A pandemic, new wars in Europe, mass protests and riots, an attempted insurrection, faltering Western democracy, the rise of authoritarianism, wildfires and natural disasters, and the destabilization of the world. world order, all of this inspired Will Of The People.”

“This is a disturbing and frightening time for all of us, as the Western empire and the natural world, which have cradled us for so long, are truly under threat. This album is a personal exploration of those fears and a way to prepare for what is to come.”

During an appearance on Zane Lowe’s Apple Music 1 show, Bellamy said he thought the single Compliance was “the best pop song Muse has ever done” and that the group’s next album would oscillate between metal, pop, electro, and much more.

Speaking about the upcoming album, he said: “We have always tried to think outside the box. We have never limited ourselves to a particular genre. This album goes from metal to pop, to my own version of an Adele song… [Il comporte] lots of electronics.”

“It’s a complete album… We produced it ourselves. We analyzed everything we had done so far. The last song on the album is called We Are Fucking Fucked. I am really happy and proud of what we have achieved. I honestly think it’s our best album.”

Bellamy also revealed that he let drummer Dom Howard take over the project: “I kind of let Dom take the lead. That’s why this album took two years. He took a week for every decision he made. Normally, I rush to do everything. But with him, everything is very slow, he takes his time for each decision. I allowed him to make a lot of decisions, to judge what was good and what was not.

About the resumption of concerts after 2 years of absence, the singer admitted: “I literally forgot how to play live – apparently I’m a rock star, that’s what people tell me. I saw a few videos. I’m getting back into sports right now. That’s how distant it all seems to me.”
