Cyprien remembers his flop with Mister V: “I didn’t want to taint my friends with that”

Invited by Zack Nani in Freewheeling ZackCyprien returned to the era of his YouTube podcasts, and in particular his first flop.

Come on, let’s go back ten years. At the time, Cyprien was one of, if not the, biggest YouTuber in France. The videographer connects the podcasts: “Le Café”, “The Walking Dead”, or “Les Bosses”. If he usually talks about everything and nothing, on March 22, 2012, Cyprien posted a somewhat different video on his channel. Entitled “Like shit”, the video is actually a music video featuring a character, played by Mister V, mocked by Cyprien for his clothing habits. A video that will not receive a good reception at the time. And which will therefore be followed by another: “Le Bide”.

Invited by Zack Nani in Freewheeling Zack, Cyprien returned to this episode. And he admits it himself:The music did not please, it was very aggressive and more.“Inspired by the musical trends of the time, Cyprien now recognizes his mistakes: “At the time, the fashionable stuff was Skrillex, etc. So I ask my friend Nodey: “Go ahead and do some dubstep for me”. And one of the simple rules of dubstep, he continues, it’s that you don’t sing over dubstep. It’s already very venerable and if you start shouting over it, it doesn’t do it. And suddenly people thought it sucked.

Cyprien : “It was more for Yvick than I was badly»

At the time, Cyprien blames himself for having attached the image of Mister V to his first failure: “For me, the tragedy of this story is that it was also one of my rare featurings with Yvick. So I bring Yvick, I say: “Dude, let’s finally make a video together”. With Nodey doing the production, so if you want there’s a real collusion, there’s something. We make the clip, which is very simple, but we buy little clothes, we do everything ourselves. And the fact that there was a flop was more for Yvick than I was wrongadmits Cyprien. Because it was my responsibility and above all I didn’t want to taint my friends with that. So that was tough.»

A failure in the great widths which will finally inspire him another video: “Le Bide”. At the time, the video highlights the “Green Thumb”, “Red Thumb” ratio of the clip. Unfortunately, we can no longer check whether the balance of power has reversed over time, YouTube having removed dislikes from videos. Only one indicator remains: the 507,000 likes on “Comme une merde”. For Zack Nani, Cyprien tells how the idea of a video on his own stomach came to him.

People don’t know how it goes on my side»

And of course it all started with a wave of disapproval: “I spent a somewhat lousy evening where I… It was useless for me to look at the comments because it was unanimous, people said: “It sucks. It sucks. It’s shit”. In addition the video is called ‘Comme une merde’, so people were in mode: “I have my top comm’ direct”.”

Far from having been created to reverse the trend, the explanatory video above all allowed Cyprien to tell what he was going through: “And finally I said to myself that I could discuss it, about how I live the thing. I turned it, mounted the response in stride. It wasn’t to stem the tide of red thumbs and all, because you can make as many videos as you want it doesn’t make a video better. But I said to myself: “Hey, I’m experiencing something that inspires me”.»

A subject that had not been discussed much on YouTube so far. And which happened to be in perfect correlation with the new ambitions of Cyprien: “At first I loved talking about stuff that everyone knows and then I started to really want to talk about stuff that people don’t know. And to explain the flop, and why but above all how I experienced it, I said to myself: “People don’t know how it’s going on my side. There we come to things that I like to deal with, something that I can almost live with”.»

A simple Bonus video, which peaks today at 16 million views. What Cyprien partly explains by his aspiration for the humorous scenarios of the time. Even if he admits that he no longer remembers the video too much: “Inevitably, my personality trait means that I like to find little stagings, little tricks and jokes. I think the video is 2 minutes 30 (laughs), is it really a video? I do not know. People tell me that they really laughed on “Le Bide”. I don’t even know what I’m saying in it anymore, I have a very bad memory. And we understand, all this dating from a time that seems very distant to us today.

In the rest of the news, Cyprien returns to the announcement of his separation with Squeezie: “People still took us for a duo”.
