Apple Music now has a sizeable advantage over its competitors

With more than 100 million titles, Apple Music now boasts the largest music catalog in the world. Quite proud of this figure, Apple is even ahead of its direct competitor Spotify and does not hesitate to let it be known.

Apple has just reignited the battle between music streaming services. After a period of calm, the Cupertino company publishes a press release to announce that Apple Music has just passed the 100 million song mark. An impressive figure which places the Apple at the top of the hierarchy and the brand is rather proud of it. “Apple Music has more songs than you can listen to in a lifetime, or even several. And more than any other platform”, says the editorial director of Apple Music. And to add: “This is quite simply the greatest music collection of all time, in any format”.

Apple crosses 100 million titles mark

Indeed, Apple’s music streaming service is doing better than its main competitors. The Amazon Music, Tidal or Deezer platforms claim more than 90 million titles; while the Spotify market number or the French service Qobuz have more than 80 million songs. The acquisition of Primephonic, a specialist in classical music, undoubtedly helped Apple to inflate its figures. This service accounted for about 3 million titles, but that does not explain everything.

Launched in 2015, Apple Music has claimed 60 million titles since 2019. In addition to the evolution of the catalog and this takeover, it cannot be ruled out that Cupertino will recount the Dolby Atmos versions. In the absence of precision, it will be necessary to be satisfied with the affirmation of Apple. The California firm estimates that “more than 20,000 performers and songwriters” release new songs every day.

A few years ago, the number of titles was used as an argument to gain new subscribers. From now on, it will be difficult to see a difference between a service offering 90 million titles and one that reaches 100 million; or is limited to 80 million pieces. This release nevertheless allows the firm to recall that Apple Music playlists are developed by editorial teams. In response to Spotify’s algorithms, Tim Cook’s company is looking to rely on human input. “Now more than ever, we know that investing in human curation will be essential for us to best connect artists with audiences”says Rachel Newman.

Still number 2 on the market

Symbol of the company’s ambitions in the field of services, Apple Music has experienced a rapid rise since its launch. The platform has quickly established itself as a major player in online music, to the point of now being number 2 in the market behind Spotify. According to MIDiA Research analyst estimates, Apple Music occupied the second step of the podium in mid-2021 with 15% market share. Apple is ahead of Amazon Music (13%), but it remains far from Spotify, which still captured 31% of the sector.

Apple, which is relaunching the battle for numbers with this announcement, has not communicated on the number of subscribers to its platform since 2019.
